Vaughan Smitherman Downloadable ADOBE PDF Brochure The Vaughan-Smitherman Historic Building circa 1848 Historical Survey Description The Joseph T. Smitherman Historic Building is a Greek Revival three-story seven bay brick building. Dominated by a monumental porch supported by Ionic columns with wrought iron balustrades on the second and third stories the building embodies the symmetry of the Greek Revival movement. Each of the three entries is comprised of a four-panel wood door flanked by three-light sidelights and a six-light transom. Windows are six-over-six configuration with a stone lintel. Brick belt courses define the second and third story. A wide band of trim follows the cornice. Originally constructed as a school for orphans by the Selma Fraternal Lodge No. 27, the building has served as a Confederate hospital, a courthouse (1866-1902), the Selma Military Institute (1904-1908), and as the Vaughn Memorial Hospital. The building is now a historic house museum and is furnished with period antiques.
