Artists have always painted outdoors, but in the mid-19th century working in natural light became particularly important to many 
artists. The popularity of painting en plein air increased in the 1870s with the introduction of paints in tubes and portable easels.
The popularity of outdoor painting has endured throughout the 20th century and into the 21st century. Alabama Plein Air Artists, also known as APAA, consists of artists from all over Alabama 
who gather once a month to paint the varied landscapes of Alabama. It’s a time to share with fellow artists; information gathered, techniques learned, and support for each other’s journey as an artist.
They meet in locations chosen all over the state. They have painted the mountains of north Alabama, the rivers, woods and ponds of central Alabama, the Governor’s garden, the azaleas of Bellingrath Gardens, and a few took part in last year’s Selma Pilgrimage. This year we are excited to host the entire group! Over 80 APAA have been invited to “paint the town” during Pilgrimage.
These talented individuals will be in the courtyards and gardens of all of the homes and several other venues. Their finished art will be sold at a Wet Paint Sale at the Selma Art Guild Gallery at 508 Selma Avenue on Saturday evening from 5:00-7:00 pm. What a great opportunity to buy an outstanding work of art that will invoke warm memories of a wonderful visit to Selma’s Pilgrimage.
